Goodbye Oakland

We made it out, and we made it all fit. Despite Kyle's work, Rocky's medical emergency and for me, a nasty cold.

On Monday, as Kyle was finishing up his work at the lab, I was at home packing, cleaning, and giving away as much as I could on Next Door. We were supposed to have moved out that day, but we'd asked Gina for an extension so Kyle could wrap things up in the lab. Home and pest inspectors were scheduled to arrive and Christine was at the house to meet with them.

I noticed that Rocky's eye looked red that morning and he was rubbing it against the wall. I texted Kyle. As the day went on it seemed to be bothering him more. I sent more texts. Kyle said he was on his way home. But then I found Rocky upstairs in our empty closet, eyes swollen shut and unable to get up. I sent another text: I'm taking him to the vet now.

A couple hours and a couple hundred dollars later, Rocky was given a shot of steroids and Benadryl and seemed to be improving.

Tuesday morning we got up and packed the car. Somehow we fit all of our ski gear, camping gear, tropical vacation gear plus anything else we might need for the next 3+ months (including an 80 lb dog and his things) into Kyle's 4Runner. We did one last pass of the house, dropped my car off at its Craigslist storage unit (i.e. a neighbor's driveway), and, finally, left Oakland.
